[Personal] When you wish upon a *Star*

April 1, 2012

Personal

Jiminy Cricket, what an opportunity! My wish is to be one of six photographers chosen to join international wedding photographer Jasmine Star and creativeLIVE at an editorial wedding workshop in Seattle on April 27-29. This is my video entry. I hope you like it!

The scoop: Since I started photography a few years ago, I haven’t found a niche – I’m just too interested in so many different subjects! Sports, people, landscapes, events, and so on…but I’ve been a bit shy of wedding photography because there’s a lot that goes into it and a lot that I don’t know (yet!). Lately, though, I’ve been thinking more and more about pursuing it. See, I’ve shot only 1.5 weddings…one full wedding for a friend a few summers ago on a beach in Seabeck, WA, (which I totally loved doing), and then “half” of a wedding in the sense that I was the self-appointed backup photographer for my sister’s wedding this past summer. Not because her photographer needed help, but because I wanted to practice! I captured the rehearsal dinner, the wedding day, and the celebratory brunch the day after. I was up until about 5am after the brunch editing all of the pictures because I wanted my sister and brother-in-law to see them on facebook before their flight for their honeymoon. The albums were uploaded 30 minutes before their flight, no joke, and I woke up to one of the greatest texts ever – my sister expressing her sincere thanks and pure JOY at seeing the photos and feeling like she was reliving the whole weekend again. My heart swelled. THAT FEELING. Oh my gosh, if I could relive THAT. It was so special because it was when I truly realized the potential ‘happiness’ impact I could have with my photography if I chose to go down this path. That’s when I thought to myself, “Well, maybe I DO have the guts to be a wedding photographer…but I have a LOT to learn.”

And it’s been rainy and gross and no one’s gotten married in Seattle since then and I haven’t been marketing myself for such work…

That’s where Jasmine Star comes in… My photography classmate invited me to a WPPI conference in Seattle back in September 2010, where we had the pleasure of listening to Jasmine speak. Not gonna lie, I didn’t know who she was, but I was still fresh in the game, so cut me some slack. 😉 After I heard her speak, though, I was hooked; I’ve been following her blog and twitter ever since, and I’ve been dying to work with her. Then, a few weeks ago, I learned that J* and creativeLIVE were hosting a workshop HERE  in Seattle (woot woot!). It was like the clouds parted and the sun shined down on me, Simpsons style. 😀

I was determined to submit a video – and I’m determined to be there!! I’d be like a sponge, absorbing so many awesome tips, tricks, and insight about the editorial style and wedding photography world. Dreaming about this opportunity has had me excited for weeks! Seattle singles, you REALLY want me to be chosen so that when you finally find *the one*, you can hire me for your wedding. Believe me when I say, “Jasmine knows her stuff!” and anything I can learn from her will only help me serve you better! Hehe. Okay, well, hopefully my friends who are already hitched will wish me good luck in this endeavor, as well. 😉 I’m pretty sure you will, since you’re AWESOME and I love you all! (SOMEbody’s a bit excited about all this…)

So, tonight before I go to bed, I’ll be makin’ like Pinocchio and wishin’ upon a STAR so that I can be part of this amazing workshop.

HUGE THANK YOU TO MY FRIEND TRAVIS for filming and editing!!! I’m so grateful for his patience with me as I tried to explain exactly how I wanted the video to look (even when I started acting out special effects I wanted him to add) – and he got it right on! He’s a rock star. (You should check out some other super tight videos he’s made: Top Recruit – Work out and Top Recruit: Greatness. I took behind the scenes pics for Greatness, it was coooool.) ANYway, Travis is your guy if you need a videographer – and I certainly did! I’m so thankful for his work.

AND merci beaucoup to my pal Chris for letting us use his gear! (LIFE SAVER x 10!)

And stay tuned to see if I’m selected! (Fingers, toes, eyes, and shoelaces crossed!) 😀
