This year was certainly crazy for the class of 2020, and as a senior photographer I’m honored to have been able to photograph a few grads and help give them a special experience to cap their year!
When I photographed Maya for her senior portraits at the end of June, I was so motivated to make her feel special. I mean, that’s what I always go for with my clients, but for this year’s seniors I think we’re all trying a bit harder, right? We spent time getting to know each other better while Arianna Scott (my beloved hair + makeup artist) glammed her up, and then we headed to downtown Edmonds.
One thing that’s really important for senior photos (and any portraits, really!) is that the environment matches the outfit styles and overall vibe we’re going for. I wanted a place that had easy access to both the beach and an industrial/city look. (For a suburb, Edmonds surprisingly has a lot of spaces that make it look more urban!)
Maya had a variety of outfits to work with, from one style honoring her Mexican heritage, to sweaters honoring the fact that she’s a Cali girl who’s constantly cold in the PNW 😉 and a t-shirt honoring her late brother. She also brought along her boyfriend and dad for company – and they were excellent photography assistants, I might add, holding reflectors and getting Maya to relax! I always encourage my seniors to bring someone along with them, whether a friend, sibling, or parents, to help keep the energy high and share the experience. It’s such a great time!
As the sun began to set, it was time to head to the beach. Maya grew up in Sacramento and only recently moved to Washington, so I thought it would be really important to get her toes in the sand (even though she was cold while the rest of us felt just fine, poor Cali girl!) 😉
Maya, I had an absolutely amazing day taking your senior photos. Seeing you come out of your shell and transform into a confident young woman in front of the camera (thanks to all those times I asked you to “walk like Beyoncé,” right?!) was so wonderful, and I am obsessssed with your photos. Especially these last ones at the beach, where I feel like we miiiight just be able to convince people we were in California. 😉 It was an honor being your senior photographer, and I’m so excited for you to start college soon! Big hugs, TB.
